To create a reliable subsonic load, it's essential to choose a heavy bullet that will remain stable despite its low speed. The recommended twist rate for 6.5 Creedmoor is one in twelve, meaning the bullet needs to complete at least one full rotation in 12 inches of travel. This ensures stability and prevents the bullet from wobbling or deviating from its intended path.

I chose the 140-grain Speer Hot-Cor bullet, which has a flat base and overall short length, making it an ideal candidate for subsonic loads. Its exposed spire point also provides good expansion. However, achieving stability in subsonic ammunition can be more complicated than it initially seems.

My initial attempt at creating a reliable subsonic load involved using Hodgdon Trail Boss powder with a short, heavy bullet and recording velocities with a chronograph. Unfortunately, I encountered problems with unpredictable velocities, hangfires, and even a stuck bullet over the course of two trips to the range.

To resolve these issues, I swapped my CCI #200 Large Rifle Primers for Winchester Magnum Large Rifle Primers. This resulted in more predictable velocities and allowed me to develop a fine subsonic handload.
